ROMAN BLACK
Our Roman black earth is a natural earth from an ore deposit containing black iron oxide (magnetite) and manganese oxide (pyrolusite). It is a very permanent pigment with a brownish-black hue and a warmer undertone in comparison with vine black. Though known by the Romans, black earths were not much esteemed during the ancient and middle ages. It was after 1500 AD that their use became common, replacing carbon blacks.
