From the exquisite wall paintings of Akrotiri in Santorini and the Minoan palaces to the rich frescoes of Byzantine churches, thousands of years may have passed, gods may have changed as well as types of drawing. Yet, materials and techniques always remained the same !
In the long journey of Greek Art through the centuries, our artisans taking advantage of the unique properties of lime developed the methods to turn a common masonry material into bespoke product of outstanding quality.
Upon their methods, as handed down to us in Byzantine manuscripts, we are producing today lime products as paints and plasters for decorative purposes.
- Lime is derived only from marble, to guarantee the best of quality.
- Burning ( calcination) is performed in traditional kilns fired with wood instead of coke, for high purity free from sulfur.
- After slaking, lime putty remains wet for months in large tanks to mature and become extra white, with fat colloid substance.
- Pigmentation is achieved with earthen pigments without impurities, derived from mineral metal oxides-just the way Minoans and Byzantines did…
For us Greeks, Lime is our Heritage !
