Tadelakt, moroccan lime mortar
The name Tadelakt refers to the traditional, moroccan application technique of a specific lime mortar. This lime mortar is produced by limestone found in the Marrakech Plateau, which after being annealed gives a lime unique in the whole world, with abilities between hydraulic and gaseous.
There are not types of tadelakt, neither cement like tadelakt, nor adding materials for tadelakt “with the aid of technology”.
The real tadelakt is produced exclusively by the dry hydrated lime of Marrakech with mineral pigments and water. Its application as a final coat of plaster, gives as a result beautiful like velvet surfaces, natural shiny, with deep color and a feeling that no cement mortar could ever give!
Like all lime coats has free transpiration, antibacterial protection and resistance in the atmospere pollution.
It is appropriate for interior as well as external walls.
During the last phase of the application, the cement is impregnated with “black soap” (savon noir, typical in North Africa) and it becomes totally waterproof, ideal for wet places, bathrooms, hamams (turkish baths). With small, round moves the craftsman holding a river pebble in his hand, pushes the oily soap inside the pores of the lime mortar, before the carbonation crystals of the lime are formed (CaCO3).
It is a real art, with principals that go back to the byzantine technique of frescos and demands great skills and patience. As it is declared by the word in free translation, tadelakt means caress…
In Damask we apply the authentic, first class tadelakt of Marrakech according to the traditional way.
