VENETIAN OKHRA
Venetian okhra (ochre for English) is a golden-yellow earth pigment, tinted by goethite. Goethite, a hydrated iron oxide, was named after Goethe, the great writer who was also a passionate collector of minerals. We find it as an important component of ore in weathered iron deposits around the Veneto region. Byzantine painters used it for its luminous color to paint aureoles around the heads of holy figures, when lack of gold.
