MILTOS
Miltos in Greek or rubrica in Latin is the name for red earth, rich in natural red iron oxide. It has been used as a pigment since prehistoric times, exploited in several parts of the old world with the finest mines, like Sinopia, having been regarded as sacred. A miltos dry ground pigment is totally natural and should not be confused with synthetic iron oxides coming from residues of the steel industry. Synthetic pigments consist of physically similar particles but, as these are the result of a uniform chemical reaction, they create a flat layer with little transparency unlike naturals.
