GLAUCONITE
Glauconite – a mineral of complex silicate composition. Rich in iron- takes the name after the beautiful Greek word, glaucos (pronounced glafkos), an adjective which means bluish-green in colour. We take it from Cyprys, the isle of Aphrodite whose husband Hephaestus, god of blacksmiths, cherished with a subsoil content full of minerals. The artists have been using glauconite as a pigment since antiquity, for the wonderful hue, and we find it, together with celadonite, described by Pliny and Vitruvius as green earth.
