CYPRUS BURNT UMBER
From Cyprus we obtain the finest umbers of earth. Such is this umber, tinted by hydrated iron oxide and manganese oxide. When burnt at a high temperature then hydrated iron oxide gives up water and transforms into haematite.The pigment alters and becomes dark warm-brown. Burning pigments is a technique familiar to painters since ancient times offering them the ability, according to the chosen temperature, to add more colours on their palette.
